I’m usually pretty current on all things popular culture, but the 50 Shades of Grey phenomenon just made it on my radar over the weekend, and WOWZA.
No idea what I’m talking about? Let me break it down. A British TV-exec turned writer had the brilliant idea of writing a Twilight-style series for grown women, i.e “mom porn,” and the books are FLYING off shelves and dominating Kindle sales.
The premise: a naive college student in Seattle (Ana) falls for a billionaire playboy with a penchant for S&M (Christian Grey, hence the title). Much kinky boom boom ensues. Billionaire falls for dumb dumb student. The end. The parallels between Bella/Edward and Ana/Christian are endless and obvious. Innocence, power, experience, desire, capitulation. The author, E.L James, simply swapped out corny vampire talk for whips and chains. And created a license to print money.
My take on all of this? Despite our good jobs and our girls’ nights and our Badass Bidness-woman aspirations, we want a man to take care of us, a notion so forbidden for women to admit as to be taboo. Modern relationships are about equality, partnership, and independence, but my hunch is that most of us would be perfectly happy with a little less equality and a little more domination. Just sayin.
True story: I bought the book Sunday afternoon and finished it Sunday at 1:36am. You will too. Thank me later.
My eyes are bleeding. TMI.
